Changing The Way Malaysian Students Learn English, One Lesson At A Time.

If you ask GuruLab’s Co-Founder, Eer Kai Song and Vicky Tan, why they dedicate their lives to education, they can synchronously answer with the word ‘passion’. Despite being overused in spoken English, the word best describes their drive to help students have access to better opportunities with high quality education.

GuruLab has received USD 1 million (MYR 4.2 million) in seed funding from Maxis to build technology and advanced data analytics tools to improve English learning outcomes for students in Malaysia.

Kai Song's Story

Co-Founder

At the age of 18, Kai Song rallied 200 youths and built her first education non-profit with to help underprivileged communities access tertiary education. She went on to pursue a Master in Information Engineering with a Machine Learning focus at the Cambridge University which equipped her with the technical foundation to transform the traditional “one-size-fits-all” approach to education, leveraging on data.

Kai Song also has experience working in top-tier management consulting firm McKinsey & Company in London where she served clients on growth strategies in the UK, US, Middle East and Europe. She was also the Chief of Staff to the CEO of an Advanced Analytics startup in London. Kai Song returned home after spending many years in the UK when she saw an opportunity to contribute to the Malaysian education system by leveraging the power of data science. She is a strong believer that English is a key to upward social mobility and with a personalised approach, she aspires to create a world where no student is left behind.

Vicky's Story

Co-Founder

Vicky discovered her love for teaching when she started teaching English during her gap year. She realised that students who speak English fluently tend to do better at school and can apply for university admissions and scholarships with relative ease. But for students who struggle to even string simple sentences together without grammar mistakes, learning English can be a very tough journey. The journey is made even tougher when their teachers struggle to give everyone their undivided attention due to the immense workload of having a large number of students in one class.

Since then, Vicky has been on a mission to make personalised English learning more accessible for all students. After completing her MSc in Education at Oxford University, she started an English learning centre, Veritas Academy. She has helped public school students to get As in English examinations and even college students to secure scholarships. The teaching technique that works best for her students is giving detailed feedback to her students and tracking their progress in key areas across time so that she can tailor her lessons to the students’ needs. But there’s only so much one person can do, and this problem inspired her to building GuruLab.

How GuruLab Was Formed

Kai Song and Vicky met in mid-2021 during the peak of the pandemic and when they shared their visions with each other about how education can be done better, a lightbulb moment triggered and they decided to team up to do just that. With GuruLab, the aim is to equip highly qualified tutors with cutting-edge learning analytics to provide each learner the tailored help that they need to improve their English proficiency. The feedback algorithm and data-driven methodology is set to address the shortcomings of the traditional approach used by schools and tuition centres.
